Evaluation of pre-operative albumin in the prediction of outcomes of emergency laparotomy

Background: Hypoalbuminemia has been established indicator of nutritional status, which may and not be clinically apparent, but is linked to a significantly higher risk morbidity mortality. Objective: To assess the post-operative with relation pre-operative albumin status in patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery. Methods: It was hospital based observational study, 100 surgery at Tertiary care Hospital included. diagnosed if serum level less than 3.5 gm/dl. Study period between May 2021 April 2022. The Statistical software namely SPSS 11.0 Systat 8.0 were used for analysis. Results: Pre-operatively, 60 had hypoalbuminemia (serum <3.5 g/dl) 40 normal levels (≥3.5 g/dl). Out patients, 41 (41%) developed complications postoperatively. 32 (50%) out (with albumin<3.5 complications. 9 (17.5%) ≥3.5 g/dl Mean length stay found i.e. 9.70±4.75 days hypoalbuminemia, compared 6.45±3.31 those having g/dl. Conclusions: Preoperative useful low-cost prognostic predictor predicting outcome.
